At Huntsville Laser Center, we focus on LASIK eye surgery to correct refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. Our LASIK surgeon Dr. William Mitchell has dramatically improved the vision of their patients in the Huntsville, Madison, and Decatur areas. Dr. Mitchell is not only an experienced LASIK surgeon; he’s also had LASIK surgery. Since he is acutely aware of the concerns you may have prior to surgery, he makes every effort to allay your fears and ensure that you understand the LASIK procedure at all stages.

LASIK is one of the most common and safest eye surgery procedures available. In fact, Dr. William Mitchell has performed well over 7,000 LASIK procedures. The basic concept of LASIK is to employ a precise laser to reshape the cornea, thereby improving your eye’s ability to focus properly. Although there are a number of different technical variations to LASIK, the procedure follows the same general pattern. First, you will see one of our Refractive Coordinators who will take several measurements on your eyes to determine which procedure may be best suited for you. Then you will see Dr. Mitchell for a dilated pre-operative examination where an extensive eye health examination will be performed along with the necessary measurements for your surgery. If you are a candidate for the LASIK procedure (and most people are), the appointment for your vision correction procedure will be scheduled. Am I a Candidate for LASIK?
Imagine waking up every day and being able to see clearly without fumbling for your glasses, slipping on a pair of stylish non-prescription sunglasses, taking a catnap on the couch without worrying about your lenses, going for a swim and still being able to see, and the list goes on and on. These may sound like small conveniences, but to people who wear glasses or contacts, they are exciting possibilities for an improved lifestyle. And now, with LASIK surgery, it can all happen for you.
A LASIK candidate is someone whose vision has not changed for at least two years, has no history of corneal disease or other disorders of the eye, has no fluctuations in vision due to other health conditions or medications, has adequate thickness of the cornea, is not pregnant or nursing, and is at least 18 years of age. Although you must be evaluated by a surgeon to determine your personal eligibility for LASIK, most people with normal eye conditions will find that they are qualified for LASIK surgery. If you are not eligible for the standard LASIK procedure, however, you may still be able to have another vision correction treatment, such as PRK, the Staar® Visian ICL ™ or other intraocular lens options.
