The Amsler Grid

A Basic Test That Can Reveal AMD

If you see anything other than a grid of perfectly straight lines above, we recommend you schedule a consultation with us as soon as possible. We will conduct a series of tests, including a dilated eye exam, fluorescein angiography (the use of dye to detect abnormal blood vessels), and digital imaging of your macula and entire retina to detect any issues.

Alexander Talalight MD

“My goal is to develop an individual treatment plan for all of my patients in managing their complex eye conditions.”

During that time, he was awarded the Charles Selah Award for excellence in surgery. Managing AMD We Provide Three Fundamental Types of Management

Age-related macular degeneration is a chronic condition. It cannot be cured, and any vision loss that has resulted from it cannot be restored. However, with early detection, it can be managed in order to help sufferers maintain their best possible vision for life. During a visit to Manor & Mitchell Eye Center, we will conduct an exam to determine which solution or combination of solutions is best for you:

Vitamin Supplements

A combination of vitamins and minerals has been shown to slow the progression of dry AMD. Supplements commonly prescribed contain Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Lutein, Zinc, Copper, and Zeaxanthin.

Anti-VEGF Injections

Wet AMD can be controlled with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections. VEGF is a protein that produces new blood vessels, which can eventually leak and cause wet AMD to become worse. Dr. Talalight can administer local anesthesia before injecting anti-VEGF into the vitreous (the gel-like substance behind the lens of the eye). In some cases, this medication is also found to improve vision.

Laser Treatment

Wet AMD can be managed with two laser treatments: photodynamic therapy (PDT) and laser photocoagulation. Both treatments are a means of controlling problematic blood vessels. PDT involves a combination of light-sensitive drug injections and a laser to eliminate excess blood vessels. Photocoagulation involves sealing and destroying leaking blood vessels.

Early Detection Matters

One key factor that makes AMD such a danger to your vision is the fact that symptoms don't typically present until some vision loss has occurred. In other words, you may have no idea that you are in the early stages of AMD. The simplest and most effective defense against vision loss related to AMD—and many other serious eye conditions, like glaucoma—is to undergo regular eye exams.

At our offices, headquartered in Huntsville, macular degeneration can be detected in a detailed two-hour eye exam. We will carefully screen your vision and your eyes to detect any signs of AMD or other ocular disease. We can then provide the timely care you need to preserve your vision and maintain outstanding ocular health.
